Take a bowl of hot water and sit in such a manner that your covered head is over the bowl. Now take deep breaths for few minutes. In order to enhance the cleansing property of steam you can incorporate a pinch of salt or tea leaves.

Chicken soup
Make chicken broth with lots of ginger, garlic, onion and turmeric which can get rid of the mucus from the system easily.

Eat light
With the help of diet one can improve the sore throat condition. Avoid any solid food if your throat is swollen or red. Only include liquid diet such as chicken soup, broths, herbal tea and vegetable juices (fresh). In order to reduce swelling you can suck ice chips or zinc lozenges.
